Deep-Sea Shark Workshop, Mauritius

Contracted by FAO of the United Nations to co-instruct a workshop on deep-sea chondrichthyans at the Albion Fisheries Research Centre on the island of Mauritius in June 2014 following his latest trip to the Southern Indian Ocean to further study chondricthyan biodiversity in the area. The workshop included, but was not limited to, teaching other scientists methods of research and data collect on deep-sea sharks as developed and written by Paul Clerkin.

Selected by Pacific Shark Research Center and Gavin Naylor for the Chondrichthyan Tree of Life Project to collect data from rare and deep-sea species in the Southern Indian Ocean in 2012. All specimens were bycatch accidentally caught by a licensed fishery. At least eight new species of deep-sea sharks were discovered during this trip.
